Obituary for John Johnston

John Eugene Johnston, age 82, of Eddyville, Iowa, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2018, at Iowa City, Iowa.John’s wishes were to be cremated. Services for John are pending. John Eugene Johnston was born on September 14, 1935, the son of Frederick and Edna Lucille (Simmers) Johnston. He graduated from Eddyville High School. In 1954, John went into the United States Army and served in the Korean Conflict.He first married Phyllis Mason and two children were born: Terri and Mary. They later divorced. He later married Jacqueline McCartney and to this union one child was born, Rebecca. Jacqueline passed away.John was later united in marriage to Peggy Davis. To this union they raised one son, Lance. John worked as an electrician and a lineman all his life. He and his brother owned an electric company, Johnston Electric, for several years. After the company was dissolved, he continued on his own. John also worked for L.E. Myers and Southern Iowa Utilities for many years. He was member of the IBEW Electricians Union. He served as Mayor of Eddyville, Iowa, for two terms.John was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He enjoyed golfing and later in life enjoyed dealing in scrap metal. He loved to have fun.John is survived by his wife, Peggy of Eddyville; four children, Terri Johnston of Columbia, MO, Mary Johnston-Eskew (Jesse) of Harrisburg, MO, Rebecca Askeland (Glen) of St. Robert, MO, and Lance Johnston (Laura) of Eddyville; six grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters; Phyllis Herrington, Barbara Allgood, and Betty Jean Everhart (Glen). Also surviving are nieces and nephews and many friends.He is preceded in death by his parents; former wife, Jacqueline Johnston; and one brother, Robert F. Johnston.A memorial has been established in John’s name to the Eddyville American Legion. The Eddyville Funeral Chapel is assisting John’s family with his arrangements.
