Obituary for Lloyd "Duane" Jager

On March 15, 2019 Lloyd "Duane" Jager passed away peacefully at the Serenity House in Oskaloosa, IA, after an extended battle with cancer, near the home and farm he determinedly built. Duane was born on May 22, 1937 in Oskaloosa, IA to Frank and Gladys (Fischer) Jager. Duane graduated from Eddyville High School and then Iowa State University where he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi and graduated with a major in Farm Operations. Duane was also a member of the Army ROTC and served after college. After college, Duane began his life-long ambition of farming in the Eddyville area, starting a cow-calf operation, operating a finishing feedlot, and growing corn and soybeans. He successfully expanded his farming operations for over 60 years, and proudly shared his farming responsibilities with his son, Jim and grandson, Ty. While farming consumed his primary focus, Duane also had an interest in supporting the Eddyville business community and purchased the local hardware store on main street for a period of time (renamed Eddyville Hardware). He also valued his time in service of others, participating on the board of Quad County Grain, the board of the Mahaska County Soil Conversation Service, and becoming president of Pleasant Valley Manor, where he spent countless hours tending to the grounds and the needs of the residents. Duane also served on the Southern Iowa Fair Board for over 20 years, including president, where significant improvements in grounds were accomplished, most notably raceway improvements and driving funding to restore the pavilion and other key infrastructure. His children remember a hard-working father, working countless hours to provide for the family, and leaving a legacy of successful farming for future generations. Hobbies included coon hunting, deer hunting, pitching and catching for his children / grandchildren during their formative softball and baseball years, and teaching them important life lessons through strong character role modeling. Duane is survived by his loving family: his wife of 53 years, Vivian Jager, daughter Kaye DeLange (of Waconia, MN) and her family (husband Bob, children Cole Spurgin of Albia, IA, Danielle DeLange of Ankeny, IA ,and Ryan DeLange), son Jim Jager (of Oskaloosa) and his family (wife Alisa, children Ty, Claire and Blake Jager), and brothers Tom and John Jager and their families. Duane was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Gladys Jager, his brother, Merrill Jager, and his son, Dave Jager. Visitation will be held at the Eddyville Funeral Chapel on Monday, March 18 beginning at 11:00 am with family present 5:30-7:30 pm. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 19 at 10:00 am at the Faith Community Church in Eddyville, with burial at Highland Cemetery in Eddyville immediately following the service. The family asks that donations be made to the Mahaska County Serenity House in lieu of flowers. The family asks that in coming days that you pause and remember Duane and the positive impact he had on you and others.
