Obituary for Wilma Sereg

Wilma Catherine Elizabeth Sereg, age 93, of Eddyville, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at the Mahaska Health Partnership, under hospice care in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Visitation for Wilma will begin at 10:00 A.M., on Friday, April 27, 2018 at the Eddyville Funeral Chapel. Wilma’s family will be present at the funeral home from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Friday evening. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at the Faith Community Church in Eddyville, Iowa. Burial will follow services at Highland Cemetery also of Eddyville. Wilma Catherine Elizabeth (Den Hartog) Sereg was born on August 17, 1924, in Wapello County, Iowa, the daughter of Hubert and Dora (Verbeek) Den Hartog. Wilma graduated from Eddyville High School. She then went to William Penn and received her teaching degree. She later went on and received her Masters in Education from the University of Iowa. Wilma and Joe F. Sereg were united in marriage on October 30, 1948 in Monroe County. Wilma and Joe were blessed with one daughter Joleen and shared 44 years of marriage. Joe died on August 3, 1993. Wilma taught school from 1943 to 1963. She taught at Rock Island School, Fairview School, Bluff Creek School, Plummer School, Columbia School, Comstock School, and retired from the Eddyville Community School. Wilma and Joe also farmed during this time, retiring in the early 1980’s. After Wilma retired from teaching she and Joe owned and operated Sereg’s Locker in Eddyville. Wilma was a former active member of the Faith Community Church, the Eddyville Garden Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Eddyville Library Board. She also delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. Wilma is survived by her daughter Joleen Houser and husband Alan of Eddyville; two grandchildren Nicholas Houser and wife Brittney and Stephanie Houser and Bryce Van Genderen. Wilma is preceded in death by her parents Hubert and Dora Den Hartog; her husband Joe F. Sereg; one sister Hester Katko; and two brothers Andrew and Tunis Den Hartog. A memorial has been established to the Serenity House of Oskaloosa. The Eddyville Funeral Chapel is assisting Wilma’s family with services.
