Obituary for Adrian Van Halm

Arend “Adrian” Van Halm, of Oskaloosa, Iowa, formerly of Eddyville, died on July 14, 2020 at the English Valley Care Center in North English, Iowa at the age of 89 years, 4 months, and 11 days. Adrian was born March 3, 1931 to Adrian and Henrietta (Den Hartog) Van Halm.

Adrian was born at home, and was the first of three children to Adrian and Henrietta (Den Hartog) Van Halm of Eddyville. It was a humble home without water or electricity. At the age of 6 months his family lost their home to fire. They then lived in their wash house until a new house was built. Growing up Adrian walked 1 ½ miles each way to the Sherid one room school house from which he graduated in 1945.

His parents were blessed with two more children, Tunis Henry Van Halm and Marjorie Hester (Van Halm) Phillips. His father unexpectedly passed away from Bright’s Disease on January 6, 1941, leaving 11 year old Adrian with the task of learning to farm the family farm. John Sterk was one of the farmers in the community who helped mold his farming skills. He continued to farm the 120 acre homestead for eighty-five years.

Adrian attended the Reformed Church in Eddyville, which is currently called Faith Community Church his entire life. He professed his faith in Jesus Christ at an early age and was actively involved in the consistory and service to the church for over 50 years. Well into his eighties he could still be found visiting those in the hospitals, the elderly, and shut-ins who needed someone to brighten their day. Adrian also enjoyed attending community gospel music events.

Adrian was a favorite uncle to his nephews and nieces who loved to visit the Van Halm farm. He taught them how to milk his cows, feed the hogs, and collect the chicken eggs. He was quick to take them on a hay ride through the country side or sit on his lap while steering the farm tractor.

Adrian is survived by his cousins, 5 nephews, and 2 nieces.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday July 18, 2020 at the Faith Community Church with Pastor Dan Visser and Pastor Nick Hughes officiating.
