Obituary for Deloris Smith

Deloris “Joan” Smith, age 83, passed away on November 15, 2022 at Timber Ridge Assisted Living in Ottumwa, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 21, 2022 at the Eddyville Funeral Chapel with Rick Vanweelden officiating. A luncheon will follow at the Eddyville Fire Department. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 3-5 p.m., with Joan’s family present at the Eddyville Funeral Chapel. Memorials may be directed to Good Samaritan Hospice or to Eddyville Fire and Rescue. Joan was born on December 3, 1938, the seventh of nine children to Forest and Gail (Connor) Smith on the family farm. She married Paul Dean Smith on January 23, 1959 and to this union four children were born: Diana, Rickey, Lawrence, and Brenda.

Joan helped her dad on the farm with putting up hay, and picking corn ears by hand. She always enjoyed talking about the horses they used. She worked as a clerk, receptionist, homemaker, and she enjoyed helping seniors clean their apartments and take them on errands. She always said her favorite job was helping with the pre-schoolers at Eddyville Elementary School.

Joan is survived by her children, Diana (Monte) Billheimer of Haswell, CO, Rickey Dean Smith of Eddyville, Lawrence (Caryn) Smith of Eddyville, Brenda (Chris) Anthony of Spanaway, WA; six grandchildren, Shelby (LaDawne) Britten, Ryan (Andrea) Britten, Katie Smith, Sarah (Tim) Potter, Wren (Taylor) Anthony, Erin Anthony; six great grandchildren, Madison Smith, Ethan Britten, Ella Potter, Quinn Britten, Milo Britten, Wesley Potter, and siblings, Darrell (Geri) Smith, Dwayne (Margaret) Smith, and Doris Bodkins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Forest and Gail Smith; husband, Paul Smith; brother, Donald Smith, sisters, Dorothy Wallace, Pauline Burdett, Deana Snelling, and Donna Harsh; daughter-in-law, Diane Fugate; grandson, Dusty Fugate, and son-in-law, Ethan Britten.
